Comic Book Convention Brings Hollywood to Mesa
Amazing Arizona Comic Con hits Mesa Convention Center Jan. 8-9, 2011; Features creator and stars of The Walking Dead, and other popular comic book creators

MESA, Ariz. (Dec. 1, 2010) – Thousands of comic book fans will descend upon Mesa in January for Amazing Arizona Comic Con – an inaugural comic convention that will highlight the latest and greatest from the world of comic books.

The convention will feature a show floor packed with more than 100 exhibitors, an exciting artist alley and autograph sessions, which will give fans access to some of their favorite comic book creators. Two-day weekend passes are $25, and Sunday-only passes are $15. Tickets are available online and at many Phoenix-area comic stores, and ticket information and regular event updates are available at www.AmazingArizonaComicCon.com.

“We are really excited to kick off comic book convention season with the Amazing Arizona Comic Convention in Mesa,” said Jimmy Jay, co-owner of Jay Company Comics and promoter of Amazing Arizona Comic Con. “The Valley is an ideal destination for this event, with its great winter weather, large number of specialty comic stores, and legions of fans who come out in droves to support genre events such as this.”

The event features the best guest list of any comic convention in the southwest, sure to thrill the most die-hard comic book fans. But the weekend also offers entertainment for the general public, including a kids’ day featuring the artists behind the Disney Channel’s Phineas and Ferb, and a visit from Andy Kuhn, creator of the hit Cartoon Network movie Firebreather.

Kids aren’t the only attendees who will be wowed by the Hollywood presence at Amazing Arizona Comic Con.

Robert Kirkman, creator of the comic-turned-television show The Walking Dead, will attend and sign autographs. The Walking Dead was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Drama, and Entertainment Weekly recently named The Walking Dead ‘TV’s Best New Show.’ Additionally, Jon Bernthal, who plays Shane, and Steven Yeun, who plays Glenn, will attend the Mesa event. The first 1,000 attendees at Amazing Arizona Comic Con will receive an exclusive Walking Dead photo cover.

Another Hollywood tie at the event will be the presence of Rob Liefeld – creator of one of the most popular X-Men characters, Deadpool, who will be played by Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming feature film about the character. Liefeld will sign autographs, sketch, and host several panels throughout the event.

The exciting (and visual) programming at Amazing Arizona Comic Con includes:

  • Marvel Anime premiere weekend
    • Sneak-peek of Iron Man, produced and re-imagined by legendary Japanese animation studio, Madhouse Ltd.  Marvel vice president of television and award-winning writer, Jeph Loeb will attend.
    • Special screening of The Avengers – Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Marvel’s new children’s television show which will air on Disney XD this fall.
  • Ultimate Zombie Showdown Contest – Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at 5 pm – contestants will don their best “undead” wear, showcasing fiendish features and ghoulish costumes. Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and television series stars Jon Bernthal and Steven Yeun will judge the contest. The most wretched, hideous and frightfully-original will win the prize crown, and will receive an autographed Walking Dead graphic novel package.
  • Kids’ Day – Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 – Mat Nastos, writer and artist for the Disney Channel’s Phineas and Ferb will sign autographs and draw pictures for kids in attendance.  Activities will take place throughout the day for kids, including a visit from Andy Kuhn, creator of the hit Cartoon Network movie Firebreather. Kids’ Day will also feature an all-ages art contest, with every child 12 and under receiving a How to Draw Manga art book, and a video game showdown, featuring the top games from Wii and X-Box 360.
  • Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix – largest collectible card tournament in the southwest. Winner will receive round-trip airfare to Atlanta and an automatic bid to play in the national championship tournament.

In addition, the event will be visited by a number of costume groups, including Arizona Avengers, an exclusive costuming group based on Marvel Comics’ The Avengers, who will meet and greet fans.

Programming is updated almost daily, so please check www.AmazingArizonaComicCon.com/programming-2 for the latest.
