There is more to going to a Comic Con and flipping through old back issue bins. Going to a Comic Con is about collecting experiences, and sharing those experiences with your friends. Whether they attend the show with you, or you post on your social media.
At the Amazing Arizona Comic Con, we want to create events that will last a lifetime and bring more smiles than just during the 3 days of the conventions. Therefore we have created a full track which focuses on interacting with characters in costume, or COSPLAY, to use a new term.
The 2012 Amazing Arizona Comic Con is becoming a top destination for super hero cosplay with groups such as the Arizona Avengers, JLAz, the Star Wars Dune Sea Garrison and more in attendance, taking photos with families and fans. Further, Fan Films such as the BATMAN DEATH WISH explain the process, and the panels such as the STEAMPUNK encourage cosplay in imaginative worlds. While the WALKING DEAD ZOMBIE WALK and the Ultimate Zombie Showdown opens the field wide to newcomers, there is one main event that is set apart from the rest-
2012 AMAZING COSTUME CONTEST
Attendees are encouraged to come out on Sunday Dressed to Impress as there will be over $500 in cash prizes awarded, along with up to $200 in additional gift certificates. Attendees can compete in a Youth and a Master’s Division. The contest takes place on Sunday January 8, with pre-judging in the Palo Verde Ball Room at 11am, with the main event taking place in the Conference Theatre later that afternoon. Fans get your cameras ready as this is an event not to be missed! Rules are listed below.
AMAZING ARIZONA COMIC CON
Costume Contest Rules:
CASH Prizes for Top 3 finishes, plus additional consolation prizes.
Best in Show- $250, 1st Runner-up- $150, 2nd runner-up- $100
Rules:
To win 1st 2nd or 3rd you must have a valid admission to the 2012 Amazing Arizona Comic Con.*
It is highly encouraged that The Costume worn must be completed/fabricated, the wearer/contestent- this will be part of the judging criteria, with points awarded to craftmanship.
Required Attendance: You must be present to the pre judging at 11am to enter, and then be present again at the time of the show.
Registration: Numbers will be given to everyone during Pre-judging, KEEP YOUR NUMBER! You must present your event badge upon pre-judging at 11 o’clock in Palo Verde Ball Room.
Group entries are allowed yet no skits
PRIZES: 1st 2nd and 3rd=cash prizes
+5 honorable mentions will be Awarded
YOUTH CATEGORY:
We will also have a youth category. This will be a mini contest where all participants will win a participation award.
Additional rules& Judging Criteria
Costumes must be depicted as some character/style of character from anime/manga/comic/sci-fi/fantasy movie.
Original characters may be permitted, yet difficult to judge, compared to the accuracy of the character.
Participants should be prepared to briefly explain the process through which their costume was created.
Costumes will be judged on a variety of criteria, including craftsmanship and overall effect.
All entries are strongly encouraged to bring reference material for their costume(s). While we will not turn away entries that do not bring reference material, the absence of reference material could greatly affect your final score. Not all judges know all characters, so it is in everyone’s best interest to bring a color picture (or several) if at all possible. The reference should depict the details of the costume you are presenting.
The Amazing Arizona Comic Con staff is not responsible for judging or prizes given, as an independent panel representing the local Phoenix market will be present, with Los Angeles entertainment professionals, and San Diego theatre wardrobe consultants presiding over the contest.
* This can be a Full Day Admission or a regularly priced single day admission. Sorry, discounted tickets, groupons, or other special offers do not qualify for entries into the cash prizes. Any difference in cash amounts between these special offers and the one day Sunday ticket can be applied for entry.
